FLUID AND SOLUTE REPLACEMENT IN DIARRHEAL ACIDOSIS

Abstract
Extensive changes in body fluids and ehlectrolytes are encounterd frequently in the diarrheas of infancy and are occasionally seen in older patients. Diarrhea in adults is a much less severe problem than in infants.
Adult subjects show a greater ability to maintain normal electrolyte concentrations of the body -fluids, even though there is electrolyte depletion. However, extensive electrolyte deficits can develop in dysentery, cholera, ulcerative colitis, and in the diarrhea of nontropical sprue.
Loss of intestinal secretions results in deficits of bxdy sodium in excess of chloride. In the diarrheas of infancy a marked contraction of the extracellular volume is shown.
The correction of electrolyte disturbances encountered in the diarrheal acidosis involves both the extracellular and intracellular fluids. That is, deficits of cellular potassium as well as loss of extrac-ellular sodium and chloride must by corrected.
